West University Place, often called West University or West U for short, is a city within a city, completely surrounded by the cities of Houston, Bellaire, and Southside Place. The city is nicknamed "The Neighborhood City" as the city is mainly a bedroom community for upper-middle class families.
Almost all streets in West University Place are allusions to universities, colleges, and poets throughout the United States and the world. As of 2000, West University Place is the 8th wealthiest location in Texas by per capita income. West University continues to develop as one of the most desirable and affluent parts of the Houston area.
West University Little League was established in 1949, and is the largest Little League Baseball group in the United States, with more than 1,200 players. Former first lady Barbara Bush threw out the first pitch on opening day 2005, in honor of the establishment of West University Little League's Challenger Division, which promotes opportunities for mentally and/or physically-challenged children to participate in baseball games.

One of the biggest offerings within West University Place is Rice Village. Also known as just "The Village", Rice Village Houston has been one of the city's oldest and best-loved shopping destinations since the 1930s. Just two blocks from the Rice University campus, the area is known for its wide variety of restaurants specializing in food from all over the world, nightlife venues, and shopping. With over 300 shops in the immediate 16-block area, Rice Village in Houston has something for everyone and is known for its multitudes of small and eclectic shops and boutiques.
The City of West University Place operates its own fire department and police department. Currently, about 13,000 residents live in this city that spans over 1,200 residential acres and nearly 20 acres of commercial property. West University maintains strong inspection and permit policies as well as strict zoning regulations.

In order to preserve neighborhood green space, current ordinances require that each lot contain a certain amount of open space, prohibiting large new construction homes or remodeled homes from occupying the total yard.
Architectural diversity, price ranges, and proximity to major areas (Medical Center, Rice University, the Galleria, Greenway Plaza, Downtown) have improved housing values through the years. Demand for housing within "West U" remains consistently high.
